Book Summary | The Founder’s Survival Guide by Rachel E Turner
In The Founder’s Survival Guide, Rachel explains how the reader can change their leadership style to go from being a “brave warrior” to a “considered architect” to a “wise monarch” as the business expands. It addresses some of the most typical problems scale-up founders run into and gives them a wide range of tools to manage their staff, energy, and minds.
Only some entrepreneurs make the scale-up process unharmed because the founder road is isolated, stressful, and daunting. 20% of small firms fail in the UK in their first year, which rises to a startling 60% in the first three years, according to research by Fundsquire, a global network for start-up finance.
Rachel Turner co-founded VC Talent Lab, which provides ambitious creators working in venture capital-backed environments with founder and scale-up coaching. According to Rachel, founders who do not scale their leadership as their businesses expand are less likely to succeed.
The book gives readers the mastery abilities to talk to influence, communicate with management, and know when to apply. Rachel describes it as “a love letter to founders.” The book’s goal is to assist readers in understanding their stakeholders, employees, and businesses expectations of them at various stages of growth so that they can modify their leadership style accordingly.
Additionally, it explains how to prevent the self-defeating ego defenses that can stifle even the most inspirational founder.
My Takeaway From the Book
This book helped me recognize the demands that the company, its employees, and its stakeholders are making of us at various stages of development and modify one’s leadership style accordingly. It helped me Learn the difference between communicating to manage and communicating to influence and when to utilize both.
My major takeaway was, “Keep your energy level high so you can run a marathon, not a sprint.” It also warned to avoid self-defeating ego defenses that can stifle even the most motivating entrepreneur.
What Did I Think of This Book?
Rachel does a fantastic job when outlining what the company expects of you as it grows. As no other book has before, this one engages my thoughts. All I want from a good book is for it to cause me to think differently. The founder has a wealth of knowledge.
This book has a way of taking big, intimidating business principles that are necessary for success and making them palatable and implementable while remaining fascinating throughout.
This amazing book deserves 4.5 stars out of 5.
